Technology advancements continue to influence disability leave and absence management programs. Employers should follow these closely as new technologies will drive program improvements and options available to employees seeking time off from work. Five technology trends that are emerging or expanding include:

Software as a service.

Case management systems typically provide the information foundation for disability and absence management programs. While highly sophisticated, these systems must be flexible in their configuration to accommodate multiple human resource (HR) needs as well as ever-changing rules and regulations.

For many years, such systems were only available to employers who self-administered their programs or those using the services of a third-party administrator (TPA). Today, these system capabilities are available using newly developed software that is available as a stand-alone service. Virtually all employers have access to the same technology tools to manage their programs that were once only offered by TPAs or created by self-administered companies.
