Happy new year and welcome to the new January issue of DMEC @Work magazine! With the addition of this new issue, you can now enjoy six issues of @Work per year. And as a reminder, you have the option of downloading the full PDF or browsing articles from the issue at www.dmec.org/work-magazine/january-2017.

This is the first @Work issue to examine emerging technologies and absence integration. The articles have been written with a specific focus on your needs as an integrated absence management (IAM) professional, and they explore many of the technological changes occurring within our IAM community.

We may often wonder if technology is a friend or foe. We all want the newest and coolest phones, tablets, and apps, and yet, we complain about being “wired” all the time.  We’ve become so dependent on technology that we sometimes forget how quickly things have changed. At the risk of dating myself, I remember when I first entered the workforce, we had punch cards for data entry, IBM Selectric typewriters, fax machines, and office receptionists who answered the phone and transferred the call to a live person. Claims were filed by paper through the U.S. mail, medical certifications were sent through the U.S. mail, and we had paper files.  Well, some of you might still have paper files, but that’s another topic entirely.
