Expanding the National Discussion: Federal Paid Family Leave

Beyond Maternal Benefits

Paid Family LeaveWill the federal government provide a uniform national approach to paid family leave, or will this new benefit continue to be driven by a patchwork of state laws and employer benefits?

DMEC members weighed in with their feedback and prognostications in a recent pulse survey. Responding between Jan. 13 and 19, many of the 241 participants left thoughtful comments in addition to answering two questions:

  • Are you in favor of a federally mandated paid family leave law?
    • Yes: 65.56%
    • No: 34.44%
  • Do you expect a federal paid family leave law to be passed in 2017?
    • Yes: 22.82%
    • No: 77.18%

By a margin of nearly two to one, most survey participants wanted to see a national paid family leave law, yet most do not expect it to happen this year by a margin of more than three to one.
