An employee may be absent from the workplace on any given day for a variety of reasons. In some instances, a debilitating migraine headache may be unexpectedly triggered. In other cases, an emergency appendectomy may take both the employee and employer by surprise. A knee replacement surgery may have been anticipated and scheduled for weeks, while bereavement days for an unexpected death in the family were unplanned.

While these types of life events are expected to happen, they do result in workplace disruption and place additional responsibilities on both the employer and employee.
