The complex paid leave landscape in America is expanding as new states continue to implement paid family and medical leave programs. While understanding the difference between accrued paid leave, mandated paid leave, and voluntary plans is challenging, it can be even more difficult to explain these benefits to employees. As states continue to implement programs with wide variations such as family eligibility and duration, human resources professionals are struggling to stay abreast.

In this session, we will offer practical guidance employers can use to improve the paid leave experience for their workforce and administrators. We’ll discuss available tools that can make the process easier, and explore some new ideas that can help you stay abreast of this ever-evolving landscape.

Angel Bennett
Director, Leave Management Center

Angel has held many roles since her start with Unum in 2003, including positions as a disability benefits specialist in long-term disability and manager roles in the Leave Management Center. One of the responsibilities of her current role includes working with employers to assist with the development and administration of paid family leaves. Angel received her bachelor of science degree in human resource management from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She holds designations in life and health claims, and customer service.

Ellen McCann
Assistant Vice President & Special Counsel

Ms. McCann has worked for Unum Group for twenty years. She advises human resources on all employment-related legal issues, with particular emphasis on FMLA, ADA, leaves of absence, wage/hour compliance, military leaves, restrictive covenants, and employee relations issues. She also provides daily legal support to Unum's ADA offering, and to the Leave Management Center, which provides leave administration services to its customers. Ms. McCann received her BA from the College of the Holy Cross and her JD from the University of Notre Dame Law School. She is a certified trainer for SHRM and CE credit, and is a frequent national speaker on FMLA and ADA. She worked for a law firm in Boston for seven years prior to joining Unum.
