When data sources can “talk” to each other in real time, the conversation makes for a seamless coordination of leave programs and benefits. Application programming interface (API) — the same technology that facilitates sharing an article directly from a publication to your social media account without a separate step to log in — can also help employers integrate new leave benefits with their existing programs.

The use of APIs can enhance and simplify the complexities of multiple workflow systems, helping all of an employer’s human resource (HR) and administration systems work together. The technology allows employers to get near real-time return-to-work (RTW) updates in their inboxes or reminders placed on their calendars. The ability to transfer real-time earnings information from employer to benefit provider expedites claims decisions and helps ensure accurate payment. This rapid response is particularly useful for evidence of insurance and RTW notifications.
