Tech 101: Why HR Should Speak IT’s Language

Human Resource (HR) departments often struggle to get their share of the IT budget for strategic projects involving compliance, pay, and improving the employee experience. But that lack of technology investment can come at a great cost to the organization. Let’s walk through an example of how HR can learn to speak the IT language to get its fair share of IT resources.

As the chief people officer at TechCo, Teddy sits on the executive leadership team (ELT) and manages a large budget as well as a team of HR professionals. His team is struggling to meet TechCo’s talent retention needs and answer employee questions about absence and wage replacement benefits. Teddy sees other executives getting their IT initiatives funded and executed while his IT requests are on hold. What’s wrong with his initiatives? Teddy knows TechCo should update its digital HR presence to stay relevant in the new decade. Teddy’s ELT colleagues often remark that HR is not a revenue-generating department, and he knows this prejudices them against his initiatives.
