Many years ago, Rick Allen lost his left arm in a horrific car accident. He was in the hospital for a month. Seven weeks after the crash, he returned to work.

During Allen’s leave of absence, even though he didn’t qualify for Family and Medical Leave Act leave, his employer kept his job open. However, upon his return to work, it became evident that the loss of his arm created a permanent restriction in how he would perform his job’s essential functions. He collaborated with his employer, and they jointly developed a successful modification to his workstation. Allen is still a loyal employee 37 years later.
