Nobody goes into business to fail, so why set your employees up to stumble? Without proper support — and sometimes a Plan B — that can happen to an employee trying to return from a disability leave. The road to recovery can be hard and at times may lead to a different destination. When the returning employee’s abilities cannot meet the demands of the current job, an employer has options:

  • Work together to find the necessary accommodation for that job — the piece that’s at the heart of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • If that is not possible, always consider a different job within the organization which also can be an accommodation under the ADA. This could be a win-win alternative.
