The way an employer treats an employee during a stressful life event leaves a lasting impression. At one time, this experience was known almost exclusively to employees with a pregnancy, disability, sick family member, a significant family member’s death, or other life-changing events that occurred while working; sometimes they couldn’t take time off or had to quit due to inability to perform essential job functions.

Now the entire workforce has experienced a life-changing event — the COVID-19 pandemic — and employees are reassessing their lives. This includes their work, their physical, mental, and financial health and that of their family. Employees are searching for more flexibility and happiness and expect employers to allow flexibility and provide meaningful work.

According to a popular National Public Radio report, many employees “are rethinking what work means to them, how they are valued, and how they spend their time. It’s leading to a dramatic increase in resignations — a record four million people quit their jobs in April alone, according to the Labor Department.”1
