Change has been the name of the game for absence and disability management! And the foundational claims management practices have not been immune to the numerous changes our industry has experienced over the past several years. Addressing some of the “splashier” updates — emerging paid leave laws, marijuana legalization, etc. — can sometimes result in losing sight of the more gradual and fundamental evolution in the industry, such as the basics of how leave claims are managed. Innovations in this space are making way for more engaged, evidence-based methods, parallel to the advancement of medical treatments themselves.

In this webinar, experts in clinical care and return to work will share how newer approaches to claims management — such as treating the “whole” person and continuous evaluation throughout recovery — can not only improve outcomes, but also reduce and in some cases, prevent, disability leave. The session will feature a collaborative claims discussion among members of an interdisciplinary team, enabling benefit administrators to see first-hand how claims are assessed and a recovery and treatment plan is developed.

Carrie Bibens, CRC
Associate Director, Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Carrie manages the Vocational Rehabilitation Consultants and Accommodation Consultants in Sun Life’s Group & Voluntary Claims business unit, including development of rehabilitation services in support of Sun Life’s full absence management portfolio. Carrie’s experience extends to work with two prior disability carriers including development of quality assurance and process and procedure that supports the Clinical and Vocational teams work within the claims organization. Carrie’s experience has extended from Worker’s Compensation, to STD, LTD, ADA and FMLA. In her roles, she has developed and acted as the key leadership in executing a new business model for supporting a client’s ADA accommodation process. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and has experience as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, manager and provider.

Tracy Hamill, M.D.
Assistant Vice President, Medical Director
Sun Life U.S.

Dr. Hamill works with the clinical claims and vocational rehabilitation teams at Sun Life to apply evidence-based recovery recommendations and clinical expertise in claims management. She began her career in family medicine and outpatient clinical care before transitioning to impairment medicine in the disability insurance industry. She has been with Sun Life since 2017. Dr. Hamill earned her medical degree from Vanderbilt University.

Trish Ward, RN
Associate Director, Clinical Services
Sun Life U.S.

Trish leads a team of Registered Nurses located across the U.S. who support the Long Term Disability and Waiver of Premium organization. She joined the Sun Life team in 2017 and is a Registered Nurse with a Master's in Business and has over 20 years' experience in the insurance industry. Trish has held a number of leadership roles within the industry including managing nurses, vocational, doctoral and claim staff.
