Alexis C. Knapp has dedicated her law practice to developing a deep focus on leave and accommodation issues (The Family Medical Leave Act, The Americans with Disabilities Act, the Pregnant Workers’ Fairness Act, workers’ compensation, return to work situations, fitness for duty, and more), from assisting employers with basic compliance questions, to navigating complex challenges in this arena. As part of that work, she regularly counsels and assists employers with complex employee situations, policy and process issues, and drafting policies, forms, letters, and other documents in support of employers’ leave and accommodation efforts. She also develops and delivers customized, in-person and virtual training for HR and legal teams, and supervisory/management employees, on FMLA, ADA, PWFA, and related topics.

Before beginning her legal career, Alexis served as an associate dean and assistant professor of management, teaching courses in human resources and employment law at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Prior to that, Alexis was a human resources professional in the public sector, where her focus was employee benefits, organizational policies and procedures, and training.

Jeff Nowak is a shareholder for Littler Mendelson, P.C., the world’s

objectives. Given his experience in leave management and workplace accommodations, Jeff
regularly counsels and litigates on behalf of some of the country’s largest and diverse employers
on these critical employment issues.

Jeff is the author of the highly regarded FMLA Insights (www.fmlainsights.com) blog, which has
earned him entry into the ABA Journal’s Blogger Hall of Fame. He also is a highly-sought after
speaker on FMLA/ADA issues, most notably serving on the faculty of the National Employment
Law Institute (NELI) and a frequent speaker for the Disability Management Employer Coalition
(DMEC).

In addition to practicing law, Jeff also is heavily involved in his community. Jeff has served as an
elected Village Trustee for the Village of LaGrange, Illinois, and on the board of directors for
Marist High School, a Catholic college-preparatory school on Chicago’s southwest side and his
alma mater. A self-proclaimed baseball fanatic, avid White Sox fan and former high school/semipro
baseball umpire, Jeff just recently finished serving as president of the La Grange, IL Little
League, fulfilling a dream that rivals his daytime job.

Jeff earned his J.D. from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and his B.A. in political
science from Indiana University, where he served as student body president.

Ellen Donovan McCann

Ellen Donovan McCann’s practice is focused on complex multistate leave of absence and accommodation issues. She is a member of the firm’s Leave and Accommodation Practice Group. Ellen helps clients navigate and untangle the trickiest compliance issues with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), state leave laws, Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, company leaves of absence and Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) programs across the country. She also works with clients on paid time off issues.

Prior to joining Littler, Ellen worked for a Fortune 500 insurance company for more than 25 years. She was involved in the development of and provided continued legal support to the company’s leave administration services, which included administration of FMLA, state leave laws, ADA, corporate leaves and statutory PFML programs.

She also provided employment-related legal advice to human resources and executive management, with an emphasis on leaves of absence, paid time off programs, and employee relations issues. Ellen also managed their employment-related litigation, EEOC and state charges.
