2024 Tools & Tactics Webinar: The Intersection of LOA and DEIB – How DEIB Initiatives are Influencing the Leave Landscape

Join us for an interactive discussion on how Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives are driving leave offerings across the industry. From the federal, state, and local regulatory space to company offerings, there is no area of the industry not impacted by these efforts. With a reach far beyond the expansion of Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) programs, we will examine how some employers are using DEIB values to lead the way with innovative leave policies of their own.

We will discuss the emerging leave policies employers are offering in response to their employees’ evolving needs, including and surpassing their legal requirements. This session will examine the nuances of state and local sick leave, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), prenatal leave, bereavement leave, and everything in between.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about the various state and local leave of absence requirements outside of PFML, which seem to have arisen in response to DEIB initiatives, including accrued paid sick leave, PWFA, bereavement, special use leaves (prenatal, bereavement, etc.).
  • Identify opportunities to stay informed of new laws and changes to existing laws, and assess compliance of administration practices related to these laws.
  • Hear examples of emerging laws and cases that employers may encounter, including PWFA and how some covered conditions like infertility affect both birth and non-birth parents; evolving accrued paid sick laws (IL/Chicago, CT expansion); NY prenatal leave; employer leave offerings (bereavement trends, menopause, expanded caregiver); etc.

Jim Jantz is the Director of Compliance – Absence, Disability, and Life (ADL) at Marsh McLennan Agency, and an attorney with a dedicated focus on compliance within the ADL space. In his role at MMA, Jim is responsible for keeping the practice up to date with all federal, state, and local statutory disability and leave laws/regulations; while serving as the subject-matter expert on all regulatory issues faced by clients, practice leaders, and account teams. Jim’s wealth of experience and expertise is rooted in his roles with two large and complex employers. In one position, he concentrated on compliance within the LOA and accommodations realm. In his next role, Jim managed LOA, short- and long-term disability, PTO/vacation, and other related programs, demonstrating his versatility in managing various aspects of employee benefits. Sarah Tarnowski is a Consultant in the Absence, Disability and Life (ADL) practice at Marsh McLennan Agency. She has over 10 years of experience in the employee benefits field. In her current role, Sarah collaborates closely with other Consultants to provide exceptional service and drive client strategy focusing on employee and employer experience, cost management, compliance, and engagement. Before joining the ADL practice in 2022, Sarah worked as a Client Services Consultant at MetLife for 4 years, where she served west-coast national account clients. During her time at MetLife, she gained extensive knowledge in various products, including disability, leave, life, and voluntary benefits. This experience positions her well to support MMA’s large employers in the ADL practice. Prior to her tenure at MetLife, Sarah spent 3 years at Colonial Life/Unum, where she held the role of Core Market Program Specialist.
