California Paid Family Leave can be used to care for a family member, bond with a new child, or for specific military purposes, while San Francisco Paid Parental Leave is only available for bonding with a new child. The two benefits only run concurrently when an employee is taking CA PFL for bonding purposes. For example, if the employee were to have a seriously ill child, they would only be entitled to CA PFL.
When both CA PFL and SF PPLO both apply, the employee is required to file for the CA PFL benefits before requesting SF PPLO leave from their employer. During the leave period, employers are required to provide supplemental compensation in an amount such that the CA PFL wage replacement plus the SF PPLO supplemental compensation equals 100% of the employee’s gross weekly wage (subject to a cap). The 2021 PPLO cap is $2,262 per week.
