For remote employees, it is critical to ensure that their managers are having intentional and regular connections with them. Managers should be getting to know their remote employees and understanding their personal situations. It is also a good practice to establish a regular cadence of company-wide virtual meetings (15-30 mins) where all employees have the opportunity to interact with senior leadership to obtain updates on the company and other key priorities/challenges.
For newly hired employees, ensure they have a robust virtual onboarding and training plan and consider aligning these new employees with a mentor/buddy who has been at the company longer and can help them navigate processes and policies, establish the right connections, etc. Of course, supplying the remote employees with the right equipment to be productive (e.g., laptop, monitors, headset, etc.) will be key to their success. And finally, for those employees also managing children at home, it is helpful for managers to be supportive of flexible schedules whenever possible — allowing employees to work early in the morning, late at night, or on weekends — so that they can balance their work and home responsibilities.
