DMEC News_May 2019Resources & Tools for Supporting Employees with Behavioral Health Conditions

An estimated 23.2% of Americans aged 18 and older experienced symptoms of a diagnosable mental health or substance use condition in 2016.1 At the same time, less than half of those diagnosed with a behavioral health condition received treatment.2 When left unaddressed, these conditions may contribute to various workplace challenges, including loss of productivity, low morale, and turnover.

Although behavioral health conditions are prevalent, there remains a lack of understanding in the workplace on how to properly support them. Given that employees spend a great deal of time at work, this presents absence professionals with the opportunity to better assist those with a behavioral health condition to foster trust and aid in recovery.

In October 2018, DMEC partnered with The Standard to create the Managing Optimal Work Performance Through Behavioral Health Conditions white paper to help employers understand the typical progression of a mental health or substance use condition and its corresponding symptoms. The sequence of symptoms can be used to better identify employees in need and connect them to available resources.
