The CEO’s Desk: Is It Human?

By Terri L. Rhodes, CCMP, CLMS, CPDM, MBA

Artificial intelligence (AI) is embedded in many items used every day. The most common is your smartphone; however, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. How many of you use Siri, Google Home, Alexa, or have a Nest thermostat? Or how many of you have had a conversation with someone, and your phone “produces” pop-ups on that topic? These devices learn your habits and predict how you will act, expanding AI’s influence in our everyday lives.

Many think AI is new. The history of artificial intelligence, however, starts as far back as 1954,1 and while it includes several “false starts,” there hasn’t been an “AI winter” (a period of reduced funding and interest), in almost a decade.

Around 2012, our interest in AI and machine learning, especially in corporate communities, peaked and brought us to where we are today. There continues to be an increase in funding, investment, and interest in products and services that deliver AI. Human resources is currently using AI to monitor the employee experience, in recruitment activities, in learning and development, in people analytics/process management, and in answering routine questions through chatbots.
