Employers are constantly struggling to do more with less to stay competitive while supporting employee engagement. U.S. employers spend over $400 billion annually on direct and indirect costs from absences for all occupational and non-occupational leaves;1 having employees off work can reduce profit or drive losses for some companies. Effectively managing absence helps employers achieve a bigger return on investment.

Key to containing absence is the use of job descriptions (JDs) to help manage return to work (RTW). Traditional JDs, created by human resources for hiring and managing employees, often lack specific physical, cognitive, environmental, and psychological functional demands, which are necessary to be effective for RTW purposes. Many employers are aware of the need for effective JDs but cannot afford to hire vocational experts to create complex physical demand analyses for every role. Indeed, such JDs are typically more comprehensive than needed for the average disability claim.
