What a different world we live in today. None of us could have imagined the sudden and deeply impactful way COVID-19 has affected our businesses and our personal lives.

As an absence management professional, you hold a unique position during this uncertain time. You understand workplace accommodations and remote work, but significant new concerns have arisen as well for many employees now working at home.

While DMEC has always been a virtual organization, even we didn’t have a blueprint for spouses and children entering our workplace. Our staff was accustomed to working from their home offices as their spouses and children headed off to work and school. We, like many of you, didn’t plan for the stresses and strains of sheltering in place, and new “co-workers” that require supervision & snacks.

And that is just the start of the challenges to our workforces. Domestic violence is reported to be increasing. Adult children are moving back in with parents. Houses are now schools, and some employees have older parents who need extensive care. A trip to the grocery store has taken on new meaning and risks. How can employees maintain productivity when they are socially isolated, yet buried with needs, risks, and obligations? This is not your typical work-at-home accommodation.
