Lessons From a Pandemic: Workplace Best Practices are Here to Stay

The pandemic introduced numerous changes to workplace norms. Some of the hygienic practices that sprouted up during the pandemic — from elbow bumps instead of handshakes to adding hand sanitizers to every workstation — could be included in healthy workplace routines for years to come.

And they should be. People need to embrace choices that minimize exposure risks.

U.S. employers had to address the pandemic almost overnight in early 2020. Some shifted to remote work and flexible schedules. They retooled workstations, rerouted foot traffic, implemented testing policies, and increased communication and signage on health and safety practices.

Now, nearly two years later, the nation is addressing a fifth surge with the highly contagious COVID-19 delta variant. While vaccines are reducing illness severity, vigilance remains paramount, and lessons learned early on can create healthier workplaces.
