Making Leave Management and Accommodations More Equitable

Technology has become an integral part of the workplace, and it has revolutionized the way some businesses operate. It can also create more compliant, equitable, and fair leave and accommodation programs by streamlining the submission process, simplifying case management, and ensuring clear communications.

While most people know leave and accommodation decisions should not be made by employee supervisors, it continues to be an issue that can increase the potential for liability. Take, for example, a case in which an employee with a hearing disability requested an accommodation from two managers, neither of whom initiated the interactive process. Although they initially told her the disability could be accommodated, the employee was terminated and told by management, “If you cannot hear, then you can’t do the job.”1
