Employers may look at disability as a progressive process. Short-term disability can lead to long-term disability, which can lead to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

Companies can see this benefits channel as designed around the individual’s inability to work. As the individual gets further along the path, the gap in employer involvement grows as the benefits program replaces income from lost work activity. Along the way, employers often disengage from the relationship as the worker’s status shifts to inactive, perhaps for a long-term basis. It’s fair to say, however, that the economic climate, trends, and demographics going forward may lead to a significant shift in this environment for employers.
