Balancing Technology and the Human Touch for Employee Leaves

By Katie Dunnington, Vice President, Absence Management, The Hartford

The need for leave is purely human. We take time off to bond with a child, recover from injury, care for ourselves and our family members, and to support loved ones. Yet the process isn’t always as human-centered as we’d like it to be. As employers outsource their disability and leave administration,1 they need to assess whether their vendor partners combine predictive analytics with automation to ensure employee leaves are handled with clarity as well as compassion.

Clarity Amid Complexity

With predictive analytics, an employee’s disability claim can often be verified and approved the same day it’s filed, which starts benefit payments. The technology reviews thousands of claims for similar characteristics such as age, gender, occupation, and medical condition as well as benefit duration to forecast how long an employee may need benefits. As a result, employees can often learn their eligibility status within minutes, which can alleviate stress.
