Mastering the interplay between paid and unpaid absences and the ability to integrate an employee’s absence “event” continues to be a strategic objective for many employers. Critical factors to success include integrated intake and notification, effective case management and return to work, well-designed absence policies, and coordinated communication. In addition, employers rely upon integrated data and analytics to support both the operation and strategic design of their program.

Technology underpins each of these factors. Employers should assess both internal and external vendor capabilities to ensure optimal integration is achieved.

The intake process should be fully integrated and simple for employees to report their absences. Options can include an online portal, a telephony solution, and mobile applications. All options must include logic to properly identify and establish the absence. The interview questions presented should be dynamic and based upon the nature of the absence. Communication options should be offered to the employee at point of intake. The selections should include the ability to receive communication via letter, text, email, and integrated voice response telephone system.
