Leveraging Multiple Technologies and Managing Their Potential Conflicts

Outsourcing to Automate

Like many employers, ARUP Laboratories (a Utah-based national medical lab) was looking for help when introduced to the power of technology to manage the work volume and complexity of leave management. Before that, they made multiple efforts to manage their leave program in-house: increasing staff in 2008, installing a leave management software system in 2009, and using company engineers to map and re-design leave processes in 2011.

The organization was facing multiple challenges, recalls Benefits Administrator Lashell Johnson. Their spreadsheet-based manual process stitched together multiple systems. Each employee received a personal meeting for a leave request. The treadmill was always on: sending out employee notices, securing medical certifications, notifying supervisors and keeping them on board with the process.
